How to Prevent Mosquito Bites on a Turkish Holiday
A few simple steps keep mosquitoes away from you and your family, from repellents to bedroom habits.
You cannot avoid every mosquito, but you can make yourself a much harder target. Prevention is especially useful at dusk and after dark, and near water, gardens and lagoons.
Use a Repellent
Choose a repellent containing DEET, icaridin or another ingredient with proven effect, and apply it to exposed skin according to the label. Put sunscreen on first and repellent on top. Ask a pharmacist or doctor about the right product for babies, young children and pregnancy.
Cover Up
Wear loose, light-coloured long sleeves and trousers in the evening, particularly around the ankles and arms. Clothing treated with a repellent adds protection.
Make the Room Mosquito-Free
Close windows or use screens, switch on air conditioning and use a plug-in vaporiser or mosquito net if the room is not sealed. Empty standing water from pots and buckets on a balcony or terrace, because mosquitoes breed there. Turn off lights near open doors at night.
Be Careful with Natural Remedies
Wristbands, ultrasonic devices and many home remedies have little evidence of working. Rely on repellent, clothing and screens.
Fever After Bites
Mosquito-borne infections are uncommon in most holiday areas, but if you develop a fever, severe headache, rash or joint pain within a couple of weeks after bites, in Turkey or after returning home, get medical advice and mention where you have been.
